Maximise the work that you don’t do!

Hi there,

Many people and teams are clear on what’s in scope and what’s out of scope—but most stop there. They never talk about what’s most important versus what’s less important.

The result is what I call a “Bucket of Must”: everything is “equally” important because everything is a “must-have”.

True prioritisation—focusing on the most valuable and easiest outcomes—is crucial to your career (and project) success.

A client recently asked me to help them introduce prioritisation, starting with baby steps:

  • Crawl

  • Walk

  • Run

  • Fly

Here’s the Crawl version:

Just prioritise things.

Write down your list (backlog, requirements matrix, Kanban board—whatever you use) and make sure:

  • The most important item is at the top.

  • Then the second.

  • Then the third.

No equals.

Like this:

Doing this focuses the mind and lets you have far better conversations with your boss (client, steering committee, spouse 😉) about what should be done first.

It sounds simple, and it is, but so many people still aren’t doing it.

Try it today. It’s a game changer.

Here’s to low-stress success,

James

f you’d like to go deeper, I’m running a 2-hour workshop on 12th March, with loads of bonuses, my book, and more.
